Add-on

Two Jeeps, two ways to see the island

The best beaches on Vieques are at the end of a dirt road. Add a Wrangler to your booking and it will be waiting when you arrive.

Why a Jeep

Because the pavement runs out

Two thirds of Vieques is a national wildlife refuge, and the roads inside it are unsealed, rutted, and slow going after rain. A standard sedan will get you to town and to Sun Bay. It will not comfortably get you to Green Beach or La Chiva.

Reach the refuge beaches

Caracas, La Chiva, Green Beach and the rest sit behind unpaved access roads.

No airport counter

Island rentals sell out weeks ahead and mean a separate queue, contract and deposit. Ours is waiting at the house - or, if it suits your flight better, at the airport when you land, at no extra charge.

One checkout

Added to your house booking and paid on the same card. No second transaction.

The fleet

Pick your Wrangler

Both are four-door Unlimiteds, both seat five, both are automatic 4x4. The difference is how far off the pavement you intend to go.

$125 / day

4 doors Seats 5 Automatic 4x4 Hardtop Air conditioned

The comfortable one, and still a Wrangler. Four-wheel drive, body-color hardtop, air conditioning and a quieter cabin. It will take you down the same tracks as the High Tide; it is simply the nicer of the two for the miles in between. Take this one if you want the beaches without giving up the ride.

$125 / day

4 doors Seats 5 Automatic 4x4 Lifted & all-terrain Flared arches

The one built up for it. Factory lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, flared arches and black alloy wheels. Both Jeeps will get you there; this is the one you want for Green Beach after rain, or anywhere the track turns to rock and sand.

Booking through Airbnb or Vrbo instead? Those platforms have no mechanism for add-ons, so the Jeep cannot be included. Message us after booking and we will arrange it separately - subject to availability.

Jeep rental terms

Where do I pick it up?

Usually at the house, waiting for you when you arrive - no counter, no queue, no second contract.

Airport drop-off is an optional service we provide, free of charge. If your flight lands early, or you would rather drive yourself from the airstrip, we will leave the Jeep waiting for you there instead. Tell us your arrival details when you book and we will set it up.

Who can drive?

Every driver needs to be licensed and insured, and named on the rental agreement.

  • 25 or older, with a full license held for at least two years
  • A valid, unexpired license - a US state license, a Puerto Rico license, or a foreign license with an International Driving Permit
  • Personal auto liability insurance in force in the driver's own name. See the next question
  • A credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit

Additional drivers are welcome at no charge. Each one just needs to meet the same requirements and be added to the agreement before they drive, and we will take a photo of each license at handover.

What about insurance?

Insurance works a little differently here than at an airport rental counter, and a few minutes with your own insurer before you travel is time well spent.

What comes with the vehicle. Every registered vehicle in Puerto Rico carries compulsory liability insurance through its annual marbete, the registration sticker on the windshield. That coverage is real, but it is limited: it exists to pay for damage you cause to someone else's property, up to a low statutory ceiling. It does not extend to damage to the Jeep itself, to injury, to theft, or to anything above that ceiling.

What is worth checking. Puerto Rico is a United States territory, which helps more than most visitors expect: many US auto policies and credit card rental benefits apply here just as they would in any state, where they would not abroad. Two questions for your insurer and your card issuer:

  • Does my policy extend to a rented vehicle in Puerto Rico?
  • Does it include collision and comprehensive on the rented vehicle, or liability only?

If there is a gap, your card issuer or a standalone rental policy can usually cover it, though both are best arranged before you collect the Jeep.

Anything the compulsory coverage does not reach sits with the driver, so it is worth knowing where you stand. We will walk around the Jeep with you at handover and photograph it, and do the same when you bring it back, so we are both working from the same record.

Is there a security deposit?

Yes - $200, held on a credit card rather than charged. It is an authorization hold placed the day you collect the Jeep and released within five business days of its return, though your bank may take a little longer to show it.

We would only draw on it for:

  • Fuel, if the Jeep comes back with less than it left with - see the next question
  • Damage beyond normal wear, or anything insurance does not cover
  • Recovery or towing, if either turns out to be needed
  • Traffic or parking fines from your rental period
  • Cleaning beyond the usual - sand and salt come with the territory and are already covered by the cleaning fee; smoke or a spill that needs more than a valet is not

Most of the time none of that applies and the hold simply drops off. If we do need to deduct anything, we itemize it and send you the receipt.

Is fuel included?

Just like any normal car rental, fuel is not included in the base charge. For your convenience, we offer two ways to handle it:

  • Bring it back full - there is a station in Isabel Segunda on your way back, and nothing is deducted
  • Leave it to us - we refuel and deduct the cost from your security deposit, plus a $25 refueling fee for the trip

The Jeep comes to you full either way. Just let us know which you would rather do.

Can I take a Jeep on the ferry?

We keep our Jeeps on Vieques, and it comes down to how the ferry works.

Vehicle space on the ferry is genuinely scarce, and those slots are prioritized for residents and for the small businesses that rely on the crossing to move goods to and from the main island. Cargo tickets are hard to come by even for people who live here, so we leave them to the people who need them.

You won't miss it. The island is roughly 21 miles end to end, and everything worth driving to is inside that.

Can I drive on the beach?

You won't need to. Driving or parking on the beaches is prohibited on Vieques, but there is always parking very near them, and the walk is very short.

Be advised, though: towing and fines are strictly enforced, and they're expensive.

What if both Jeeps are already booked?

The add-on will not be offered for those dates. We can point you to rental agencies on the island, though they book up well in advance in high season.

These terms summarize the Jeep rental agreement you sign at pickup. That signed agreement is the contract for the rental.
